SIPNOC SESSION SPOTLIGHT:

Anatomy of a VoIP DMZ

SIP Forum's third annual "SIP Network Operators Conference", April 22-25, 2013, to provide key educational and networking opportunities for telecom service provider technical personnel. Come focus on new ideas for provisioning phones safely and securely and then intentionally deciding to use (or not to use) SIP over TLS and SRTP.

Session Moderator: Dan York, ISOC
Panelists: Jim Gast, TDS Telecom; and Mark Lindsey, E-C Group

Take part in an interactive discussion and idea exchange around the motivation for a DMZ.

Debate the secrets that should be protected (e.g. provisioning password, web portal password, SIP authorization password).

Compare and contrast options for testing the factory-installed CERT before giving out important secrets in config files.

Get strategies for using a service-provider self-signed CERT so that phones that can’t prove their identity don’t learn any important secrets.

Examine costs and benefits of HTTPS vs. HTTP; and whether it makes sense to put a layer-3 firewall in front of a Session Border Controller.

Now in its third year, SIPNOC 2013 is a unique educational conference for international telecom stakeholders responsible for the deployment, management and ongoing operation of SIP-based services in service provider networks.

You can review the preliminary <http://www.sipforum.org/content/view/378/278/> SIPNOC 2013 conference schedule and list of presenters now. Speakers will explore critical “real-world” service provider challenges related to SIP applications and infrastructure, including: network security, SIP trunking, testing and application development, Fax over IP, call routing and peering, IPv6, troubleshooting and monitoring, emergency services and more.
