IEEE Communications Magazine Call for Papers:

Web-Based Communications:

)

The original vision for the World Wide Web was to make available static
documents stored on some server that was geographically separated from the
client that accessed these documents. Elements of this early web
architecture (i.e., browser, web server) as well as the protocol(HTTP) and
document representation (HTML) evolved to work within this paradigm.

However, the web has shifted away from a document based paradigm to a more
distributed and collaborative form of communication. Whereas once the web
server was the center of interaction, in today's model, the user and the
browser have replaced the web server as the nexus of communications.

Web development methods like AJAX and protocol techniques such as HTTP long
polling (e.g. COMET, Bosh) or HTTP streaming are the latest attempts to make
the web more interactive and reflective of changes occurring in real time.
These technologies allow a web server to push updates to the user as soon as
the updates are available; the user does not have to explicitly poll for the
updates.

The single-dimension tags and attributes of HTML that allowed simple
rendering of text and graphics have now been augmented by new features in
HTML5: native support for audio and video, geo-location, persistent local
storage, offline web applications, and web workers etc. are the multiple
dimensions of HTML5 today. These dimensions are necessary for modern web
applications and are transforming the browsers to become an rich, integrated
service environment.

IETF and W3C are working together on improving the Web real-time through the
introduction of the WebSocket API (in W3C WebApp working group) and protocol
(in IETF HyBi working group) that allow a full bidirectional communication
channel between Browsers and Web servers to facilitate the development of
new web based services and form of communications.

Collaboration between the IETF and W3C also proceeds on extending the web
architecture to allow browsers to natively support interactive peer to peer
communications in the form of voice- video- or gaming-sessions, and document
collaboration in real time. In such architectures, browsers become the
source and sink of both media packets that flow directly from a browser to
another while web servers are only involved during the "setup" phase of the
communication.

The papers in this feature topic will focus on state-of-the-art research in
various aspects of today's web based communications. We solicit papers
covering various topics of interest that include, but not limited to, the

following:

· Web bidirectional communication (e.g. Comet, Bosh)

· New forms of services and web based communications based on
HTML5/WebSocket

· Web Real-Time Communication: communication scenarios and business
impact

· Security in Web Communications

· Performance evaluations, analysis and implementation experience
for Web Real Time Communications

· Application protocol with transport-layer tie in (TCP) for web
(e.g. SPDY)

· Real-time transport and congestion control

· Issues in interworking new web technologies with legacy equipment
(e.g. SIP devices)

· The new web communication paradigm and zero configuration

Prospective authors should follow the IEEE Communications Magazine
manuscript format described in the Authors Guidelines
(http://www.comsoc.org/commag/paper-submission-guidelines). All articles to
be considered for publication must be submitted through the IEEE Manuscript
Central (http://commag-ieee.manuscriptcentral.com select "April
2013/Web-Based Communications" from the drop down menu), according to the
following timetable:

Submission Deadline: October 20, 2012

Notification of Acceptance: January 15, 2013 Final Manuscript Due: January
30, 2013 Publication Date: April 2013
