I'd suggest:
1) read chapters 4, 6, 9, 11, 16, 17, 19, 21, 23 and 26 from [1] (3rd
edition) and the related rfcs (specially rfc3261)
2) play with SER[2] or Kamailio[3] SIP proxies
3) play with OpenSIPS presence server [4]
4) read Kamailio's devel guide [5]
