[SIPForum-discussion] Difference between SIP Dialogue and SIP Session

Hi,

Dialog represents a temporary end to end context between two SIP
User Agents. It is established through SIP message exchanges like
for instance INVITE request and 200 OK response.

Session is a different thing, it is also temporary but it represents
a set of entities (senders and receivers) and data streams exchanged
between them.

So generally we can say that Dialog reflects a logical control plane
state while Session reflects media plane state.

So at the same time we can say that there can be a Session related
to the Dialog (i.e. ongoing call between two UAs) or that there can be
many Dialogs related to the Session (i.e. conference bridge between many
UAs).

Kind regards,
- Tomasz Zieleniewski
