OPTIONS method is already described in rfc3261 section 11. Since OPTIONS can be used out of dialog, it can be used for the heart beat purposes. As long as you get any response back from the Server guarantee that the server connectivity is up.

METHOD to check the availability of a session agent a few weeks ago...
