[SIPForum-discussion] the difference of proxies, user agent servers, redirect servers, and registrars?

Hi Mark,

 

These are the logical entities in the SIP network but physically all mentioned server may be or may not be in the single server, its depends upon the implementation.

On the functionality basis we can say like…

 

1.        Proxies:- Having capability to route the request/response to the destination, it can also maintain the status of call (depend on the stateless/statefull proxies).

 

2.        UAS:- Other party network element, UAS will get a request from UAC and will send response for this request. Or simply we can say a logical entities that generate a response to a sip request.

 

3.        Redirect Server: is responsible for 3xx response. For example a person has moved from one network to other network either permanently/temporarily. So redirect 

server will send 301/302 response for that.

 

4.        Registrar: is used for registration/location update purpose. for every new equipment in the sip network first we have to send a REGISTER request to Registrar and registrar will update your location and contact in the location server.

When I'm reading RFC3261, the sever define as following at section 6:

Server: A server is a network element that receives requests in

         order to service them and sends back responses to those

         requests.  Examples of servers are proxies, user agent servers,

         redirect servers, and registrars.

 

Could you tell me what's difference of proxies, user agent servers,redirect servers, and registrars?
