Hi Umair,
Currently H.323 is in use. But the trend is towards majority using SIP.
This is because SIP is better that H.323 in respects like simple text
protocol, which is easy to understand and implement. And also the extensions
also can be easily incorporated without much changes.
Regarding H.323 Gatekeeper, it does the exact functionality of that of the
asterisk, i.e. it acts as a proxy between two different H.323 end points.
The normal procedures of the H.323 end points registering with the
gatekeeper, and then initiating a call to another registered H.323 endpoint.
Of course, the H.323 gatekeeper supports only H.323 protocol and not any
other. So don't confuse it with a call server, or call signaling gateway.
Regards
Sandeep
