Hi ,

Diameter is another protocol like SIP...

If u have come accross the architecture  of IMS dn u Could have found an entity called HSS ,this is similar to HLR which holds the database of all Subscriber in order to communicate to the database(HSS) at any point of ur call/registration v use diameter protol....

As per the architecture...HSS & S-CSCF of IMS entity are connected to AS(application server), so AS has to support diameter also..
