We could put our purist hat on and say, "don't do SBCs".
Any request would do. The most popular is to send an OPTIONS request.

Subject: [SIPForum-discussion] SIP Ping specifications
Greetings,
I am working with two applications (Sylantro and Broadsoft) that are
attempting to SIP ping their SBCs (Acme and Juniper).
There is a lot of discussion around the way that a SIP ping should be
handled. Is anyone aware of an RFC or specifications around this
behavior?
Thanks!
Robert-
